Telepat (open source) instead of pusher

Would somebody look into telepat (http://telepat.io) ? It would be nice if flarum could use it instead of pusher.

That's the kind of thing that needs backup in form of arguments. 😉
Why should I spend any time replacing the well-working Pusher extension with something else? Why should I even go investigate it myself? That may sound lazy, but I'd rather spend time developing...

I'm sorry if I came across overly agressive in this post; that was not my intention.
Even though I feel it has been discussed enough, I'll try one more time: I'm not at all opposed to looking into viable alternatives to Pusher if they're better, or open-source, or whatever. That requires work, though. And if that work is requested in such a way, then I get a little impatient, because it feels so demanding.

Now, after reading the post again (and again and again), I guess it wasn't necessarily meant in such a way. To me, it looked like a demanding core feature request ("Hey guys, you should really replace Pusher with this other service, but I won't explain why.") when it really may have been a suggestion for anybody to write such an extension.

I'm afraid that's not how things work around here. If you ~~demand~~ ask for such a feature, let's at least hear some arguments why we should consider switching. Otherwise, this just looks like an advertisement or at least like laziness on your part...

I did not read it as demanding, nor advertising. The OP asked a question and stated that it would be a nice thing to have. Not everyone sugar coats things.

Because Pusher isn't free? Because it isn't working that great on this install of Flarum? Because having a rich extension community is worth it? Because it is always good to have alternatives?

The problem here is there's a huge asymmetry in terms of efforts. It takes a few seconds to say "Hey, how about replacing your thing with some other thing? How about XMPP that would be cool?" I don't even know how XMPP works. Doesn't matter though, I guess they will spend time looking into it and evaluating it right?

Flarum only progresses when Toby or Franz work on it. [1][2] If they have to spend time responding to half-assed feature request then Flarum's progress halts. Developers time is a resource and those half-baked feature requests drain it to no one's benefit.

JoshyPHP there was no need to reply. A canned "It looks interesting, we will added to our list." (whichever that list might be). Or... someone else might have want to tackle it, you never know.

If you want to replace pusher then you can use a compatible reimplementation like slanger or IPE (both FOSS). The advantage is that you don't need to change anything in flarum (apart form the URL to the service). OP did not describe anything about compatibility or features. If is not compatible with pusher this would mean additional work for the devs, without benefits (at least none that we know of, because nobody made an argument for telepat so far).

d That's assuming they know what Telepat is. If they don't and OP does not make a case for it then they still have to spend time researching it later. It's the credit card of development and it's not sustainable.

I only asked to look into it, I was not demanding anything, I came across it and thought it's interesting especially since it's free and open source just like flarum (but not pusher). One way flarum can make some money to support development is by offering it as a service to flarum users for a fee. (But with the option to use pusher or anything else for that matter)

To which I (or someone) would of replied, "Please search for existing posts such as this one that already discusses the issue and is already resolved.

That being said - I really, really want to be able to point that app at any service (such as my already and waiting pusher service) and attempted to hack it by modifying files the best I could to point to my service to no avail 😢
(I only managed to break it 😃)

Hello everyone, one of the founders here. A colleague pointed out this discussion and I felt I needed to address things.

First, no one in our team is doing random posts with "hey check this out, it's better etc" 🙂
As one of the founders, I'm happy to see we have many early adopters that are willing to spread the news but this never happens with us orchestrating stuff.

Second: we're not competitors to Pusher. Pusher does mainly transport ( like PubNub) while we do object syncing, persistency and delivery. Delivery is done through Socket.io (so that's the real competitor)
Devs. can integrate any of the transport products instead of Socket.io - we just relied most of the work so far on other open source awesome components.
