Do not show sub categories

I apologize in advance if the discussion already exists, but I couldn't find what I need.

I'd like to know if it's possible to not show sub categories when the primary one is selected, showing them only when they are selected.

For some reason, a single rule with :not(.active) doesn't work, don't know why.

Go to your admin section and choose the tab Appearance. There you can add custom styles (at the end of the page). Just insert the code I gave you above.

You shouldn't edit core files in Flarum. Either use the means provided by the software (see above) or write a proper private extension. Otherwise you will predictably run into problems once your Flarum gets an update.

Usually it should be enough to reload your page (Ctrl R, Cmd R), in the case of mobile operating systems you may need to clear your browser cache.

In this case the sub-tags wouldn't be sub-tags, they would be other top level tags.

A sub-tag shows a subset of a top level tag, that's the idea behind this way of organising discussions.

At the moment, robinodds, that's not included behavior. You (or someone else) could write an extension to do it that way.

I understand that, but in which way are these tags sub-tags then?

I understand now what you want to achieve, but as @jordanjay29 mentioned already this is not possible with the stock software and there is so far no extension that provides that. It should be doable quite easily though for someone with the necessary skills.

But beside that, I don't understand your intended usage.

Let's say your tag is automobiles and you have sub-tags for different brands. If you'd exclude brand-specific discussions from the main tag, you'd have to describe it as non-brand-related discussions about automobiles, but then the brand-specific tags wouldn't fit as sub-tags anymore.

Could you give an example what kind of tags you think about?

I understand, what you want, but I don't understand why you want it that way.

If I click on the Extensions tag I assume to see extensions, all extensions and not only those extensions, that aren't dealing with languages and aren't dealing with theming. So if you exclude discussions with sub-tags from the discussion list, you have to explain that the discussions shown are only part of the discussions about extensions. I would find that unexpected.

Look e.g. at the Feedback tag. If you exclude from the tag list all those discussions with sub-tags, only a small number of discussions would remain. In my opinion this wouldn't look attractive to visitors.

It's a more traditional hierarchy for forums. Forum > Sub-forum, where topics can be in only one place at a time.

Our current usage here doesn't follow this, so it wouldn't appear to have much use if you only judged based on this site. I assume OP would like to set things up differently.

I know this kind of organisation, had used it im my own forum as well (forums grouped in categories). But in this case the higher levels of the hierarchy only contained sub-forums but no discussions. Examples:

But finally after some searching I found an example of a forum with sub-forums as well as discussions in it in the way the OP is thinking about: Gaya Online, e.g.

https://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/gaia-community/c.26/

To me it still seems counterintuitive, but if Gaya Online is using it, there must be a place for it. ?
