Videos on how to extend Flarum

Hi everybody,

I've wanted to make some videos about programming for some time. So here's the first one.

Sorry for the audio quality it's awful. There must be something wrong with the mic that I was using... I tried my best to fix the worse in prod but I'm definitely not as good as audio editing as I'm at programming ? I will try to find another microphone if I record another video. I will also try to find a quieter keyboard ?

And let's say this helps practicing my English ?

This first video is about the extensibility of the signup and login modals. I wanted to get this improved for beta8 and I was going to code it anyway so I took the opportunity to make this first test video.

Even with the very boring parts edited out It's a bit long so feel free to watch it at higher speed or skip parts. In the first part of the video I take a look at how the modals work and how to extend (hack) them in beta7. Then in the second part I write a PR for core (hopefully for beta8) so it's easier to extend, and make a demo extension using those improvements.

I also want to do some shorter, more tutorial-oriented videos. That first one was more of a follow-along.

Let me know what you think and what else you'd like me to cover ?

clarkwinkelmann if you could make the better modals a package that I could require in my own extension, I would love that.

Edit: I mean you could just PR it to core, but I'm impatient and want it for beta 7

aley ~~please do not create duplicate posts. Eventually somebody will give an answer to your existing post.~~ I was pretty sure your other post contained the same question. As I said there the answer is basically the same.

There is no native way to enable oauth providers but not password login/register. If you're just looking at hiding them you can use CSS rules (but this won't stop them from working).

To block standard register or login you'd need to do that as part of an extension. Maybe blocking the /login endpoint with a webserver rule might be enough to prevent normal login. This method doesn't apply to register endpoint because it's still used to do the final part of oauth registration.

Regarding extending the login modal that's certainly one way of doing it, though it will probably break if any other extension tries to extend the modal as well. You should use the extend or override helpers of Flarum where possible. You could use something similar to what I did in the Flagrow Terms extension to add stuff to that modal. That's exactly what I do at the end of the video ?

You might be able to backport it partially to beta 7 by using the "hack", but I don't think it's worth the effort. Just put pressure on the core team to get it merged and release b8!

That's a very good idea! A video for each of Flarum main components. Some might be a lot longer than others...

Though this might just end up as me ranting about what isn't possible in b7 and writing PRs because I can't support seeing something unfinished ?

It's been a while, but here's another video ! This time I've tried for a more tutorial-like approach to describe how I've created the latest Flagrow extension (extension discussion awaiting approval)

It's still pretty long (25min), so I guess fast forward is your friend if you're already familiar with what I explain ?

The more videos Flarum will have, the better its marketing would be.

Hi guys, I'm working on a new tutorial based on the questions I've seen a lot recently. This will also be the first tutorial for beta 8 that I make.

I will try to make it as progressive as possible, as anything can quickly involve a lot of concepts once you touch frontend and backend.

The tutorial will be about adding a custom field to the post composer, so that the users can choose a license for their posts. There will also be a settings panel with a few options that change the way the field looks like as well as the validation required.

Here's a quick preview of the final result:

The code is already on my GitHub for anybody who wants to take a look 😉

If there's any interest in actually using that extension, I'll publish it to Packagist when I'm done with the tutorial. Maybe an extension for FoF ?

Hey it's been a while. The license extension tutorial above was never finished and ever since I prepared it I thought it's too ambitious as a single tutorial, so I migh split it in smaller parts or do something simpler instead.

In the coming weeks I will be back to freelancing and also want to start publishing tutorials again.

I also have plans for some non-extension and maybe non-flarum security-related content, but the focus of the channel will remain Flarum extensibility.

Starting with the next video I'll start advertising my "Clark writes code" Patreon as a mean to financially support the channel. I hope I'll be able to count on your support to keep releasing regular free tutorials!

Until then there will be no particular schedule for video release, but I am hoping to release at least one per month. It will depend on my availability. If you have requests or ideas for tutorials, keep them coming!

luceos indeed. I might switch in the future.

Because I expect to have at least one video published a month, I'd think most people would set a monthly limit anyway. If the schedule is one video every few months, then yes I think it would make way more sense to use per-publication.

Personally I prefer supporting creators per-month, as I know exactly how much I'll be giving.

As a creator I also expect less pressure to decide if a work should be counted as patreon-supported or an extra if people support me monthly 😇
