Ordered list.

Maybe I missed something, but I tried to create a ordered list. It works fine, when you have numbers 1, 2, 3 etc. But But when I wanted to start with 3, or miss one number (f.e. 1, 2, 4), it completely ignored me. How can I create a list starting with 3?

You can't. Ordered lists start at 1 and increase by 1 per item. Why would you start a list at 3?

adasiek It seems to me that "replying to certain points" is not the best argument in favor of what you want. Sure, being able to start a numbered list at 3 would be handy if you want to reply to point 3 and every point that follows it. But what if you want to reply to point 3, point 5, and point 8?

Automatic list-ification would tend to get in the way then ...

JoshyPHP This sort of thing could come in handy when you want to create an ordered list that is divided by headings into sections, or otherwise interrupted. For example:

Preparation

1. This is the first preparatory step.
2. This is the second preparatory step.

Installation

3. This is the first step in the installation process.
4. This is the second step in the installation process.
5. This is the third step in the installation process.

Cleanup

6. This is the first step in the cleanup process.
7. This is the second step in the cleanup process.

It would be nice to be able to do that without making it an unordered ordered list. 🙂

There is a lot of cases like this. Bottom line is, this is confusing for user. When I'm typing "3.", I want to see "3.", instead of software knowing better 😉 I just wanted to know if this is a bug or a feature 🙂

It's working as intended ... but the flavor of Markdown that's supported is not as flexible as it could be.

You can enclose the numbers in backticks to force literal rendering:

3. This is the first step in the installation process.
4. This is the second step in the installation process.
5. This is the third step in the installation process.

That prevents the auto numbering, but it also renders the numbers in a fixed-width font. And of course you don't get the nice indented list formatting either.

You can escape special characters with a backslash, e.g. 1\.

I think @adasiek doesn't want an ordered list as you are thinking. He wants to be able to create a list, like you could in any other textbox field:

3.- Test
4.- Another

That is not possible if you enter 1. an 2. because the formatter will automatically assume Markdown. @JoshyPHP, what is the trick to tell the formatter not to convert, and treat things literally?

Would it be possible to make different flavors of Markdown available? I'm imagining a radio button setting that would allow admins to specify which Markdown flavor they want to support on their site.

Interesting! That gets rid of the fixed-width font ... but still no indenting.

That link says this:

It’s important to note that the actual numbers you use to mark the list have no effect on the HTML output Markdown produces.

Isn't that the opposite of the current implementation? 🙂

Technically, anything is possible but it would need to be implemented as a different Markdown-like plugin for s9e\TextFormatter. The ratio between the amount of work and its usefulness is not there.

Franz They're the same. Regardless of the actual number you use (the examples given are 1-1-1 and 3-1-8) you get the same HTML, and therefore the same result: 1-2-3.

I do see a great benefit in being able to do this. From this post on SE, I was directed to commonmark.js – more info and a demo at commonmark.org. CommonMark allows these types of ordered lists. This could be a possible solution to replace the current markdown implementation.
