Like @jordanjay29 said, a post starting a discussion is a post as well, often it's called original post.
A discussion is just a collection of posts, it has a title but no body. Posts have a body and (in the case of Flarum like many other forum softwares) no title.
You want the original posts excluded from the list of posts, that's a legitimate wish, but you shouldn't view everything else as wrong. Flarum is in the tradition of many other forum softwares here and so this behaviour is expected by many users (me included).
