Load times slow

I'm using Flarum in combination with Nginx and PHP-fpm, and the load times average at around 3 seconds. Does anybody have some tips about what I can do? opcache seems to be enabed.
I'm on version 5.6.13-0+deb8u1.

Can you use your browser's dev tools' "Network" tab to find out which requests are slow?

It shows that after I request for instance a topic it just waits 2 seconds until I download the page. The download itself only takes around 1.8 seconds for the page, and afterwards it downloads scripts and stuff pretty fast, too.

The MySQL server runs on a remote root server within the same datacenter.

Kakifrucht can you do a ping to that other mysql server? I'd like to know the response times.

My instincts tell me it must have something to do with that non-local mysql server.

Shouldn't be the problem I suppose.
Also the main page is quite fast, it only runs on minimal PHP though. My main Portal is lightning fast with instant respond times.
The initial load of the forum takes a long time at around 3 seconds, when only requesting threads it goes faster at around 1-2 seconds.

I suspect that my server is just too slow. I will probably look for some vServer with dedicated CPU resources.

Fixed it, switched server to a faster one, installed MariaDB locally. Lightning fast now. Thanks for your help.

So I guess this means that Flarum is significantly more intensive than Esotalk... although I can't seem to find any details as to why this is the case... E.g. Esotalk is snappy on a free azure instance, but Flarum has atrocious loading times on the same hardware as people have observed on gitter (you can see how slow it is here: http://techforttest.azurewebsites.net/)

Perhaps someone can enlighten us/me why Flarum is significantly more resource hungry? I'm no web developer so I'm not sure where I'd look in the codebase.

Yes, I'm aware that "free" will only get me so far, and I don't plan on running this with lots of people, etc. (Not to mention that you have to have some sort of a subscription first (I have a Dreamspark subscription) so it's not necessarily "free") However, Esotalk, which uses the same hardware and DB setup, performs very well vs. Flarum - which is why I posed the question

So some sort of underlying framework/engine or just the way things Flarum does is different than Esotalk, and would like to know what that is/are.

Kakifrucht I do not run it locally, however it's using the same setup that Esotalk does - MySQL from Cleardb. This isn't a VPS so unless someone knows of some hacky way to get a MySQL server running in a web app (which probably isn't a great idea given the resource restrictions of the web app), that's not going to be doable. However, Cleardb didn't report any queries or such taking a long time to execute from what I've seen.

Free will only get you so far in this world. If not a misconfiguration, then it may be the limited resources offered in "free" instances.

If anyone else happens to find this thread & is using nginx + php-fpm, be sure to correctly set your php-fpm configuration based on your available resources. The default configuration is tuned for a multicore setup. If you have a single or double vcore instance you should adjust accordingly.

[unknown] Yeah, weirdly the issue for me was the fact that even though my SQL was in the same datacenter on a dedicated root server (while Flarum ran on a vServer), it only ran fast after I installed Maria locally on the same system. It went lightning fast. Don't know if misconfiguration of DB or what the issue here was.
