Well, I'd first move the side-panel from the left to the right, replace the search box with one working the same way the Discourse search works (I mean press the icon to reveal the search box; however, I'd preffer to have it shown to the left, instead of to the bottom), and since I'm at it, it would be nice to be able to have sub-categories. One level of subcategories would be more than enough for most needs.

Did you know that tags can be nested? Secondary tags can nest inside primary, creating a layer of subcategories like you desire.

Wouldn't a custom theme solve these issues for you?

VIRUXE Most likely, yes. But having it by default like that is not aestheticly appealing. Mostly after you've been using Discourse for a while. And I don't want Flarum to be tought of as a backup plan, in case Discourse cannot be used.

Sapioit Aesthetics are pretty personal, though. It's a legitimate UX question, but I'm not sure that 'because Discourse does it this way' is a legitimate answer.

jordanjay29 Then what about this: github decided to get rid of the sidebar and moved that content to the top of the directory listing for the exact same reason: aesthetics. Or UX/UI Design, ease of use, mobile-friendly or however you want to call it. As a designer and developer, it's all the same, for me. (Well, not exactly the same, but linked tightly together.)

Sapioit Those are two different examples. Discourse has its sidebar on the other side, while Github removed it completely. I guess I don't see how that's conclusive evidence that Flarum's must change.

I agree, that might not be a bad thing to have. For example, many Japanese sites tend to put the sidebar on the right instead of the left. (It's a quirk of Japanese layout design that's rooted in the fact that the language was originally written top-down and right-to-left.) This isn't obligatory by any means, but I suspect many Japanese designers would be happy to have the option of putting the sidebar on the other side.

That's just an example. A more flexible arrangement would make it easier to apply Flarum more widely.

As for the right <-> left, having 2 themes with the instalation can't be a bad thing. However, the 3 options should come with the default Flarum instalation, either as extension or (up to) 3 themes with the only difference being the sidebar.

Extensions are a core part of flarum (see what I did there?)
They're meant to provide modularity (ability to add and remove specific code / functions) to a basic flarum install. Much like wordpress does with its plugins.

In theory, you ought to be able to remove all extensions and still be able to operate flarum albeit without likes, tags, notifications, etc.
The sidebar is not a critical piece of flarum and having it as a extension would probably suit it better. It's been there since as long as I've seen flarum though - so it's probably one of the few non-critical parts of the core.
Having it as a extension would allow you (or someone) to program more options - without needing access to the core files.

As for it breaking, of course it could break at any time. Having it as a extension, inside core, or as part of some css code could all result in that since a "break" simply means code that isn't compatible with other parts of code.

I see no link betwin those two things. Just because it's there since the beginning, doesen't means anything but the fact that it was there at the beginning. It doesen't means that it should stay there, or that is good to have it there, or, for that fact, that it's a non-critical part of the core.

Sure, getting Flarul out without Composer might be more important, shortly followed by adding Themes support, if it doesen't already haves, but it doesen't, in any way, mean that since it's been there first it should stay there for now, or forever. This is how evolution works: You adapt for the enviroment.

What about having an option to have the sidebar to the left or to the right (and it would only imply loading another CSS file to change the position of the sidebar) or not shown (a CSS file to hide the sidebar and make the rest have the width:100%).

Sidenote: The comment window might really use a bar with the buttons to apply markdown to the selected part of the comment. But a extension would do...

The option to move anything anywhere can perfectly be facilitated by an extension. In fact this forum already has some edits run from within an extension.

Flarum is still in development, how it will develop mainly depends on the community. At this time other tasks have a higher priority however, so putting something that can be solved with an extension on the task list for the core doesn't make sense. Hope you agree.
