A choice had to be made I suppose... It's probably not a common choice to allow 2-letters usernames on forums.
Changing that behavior in core requires an extension and might be complex. Editing core files is possible as a temporary workaround but they will be reverted during most composer commands.
One easy way to do it without editing any code is to rename your users through a database editor (phpmyadmin for example) once they have been created. Features like auto-filling usernames might not pop up for 2 letters (not sure) but otherwise it should work.
lensco It could also easily be solved by having a seperate screen name option
Beta 8 will have that ability. Still not sure if I'd allow 2-letters screen names on my forum but at least it will be easier to do then 😉
