MikeJones Depends on
- your current ec2 instance parameters;
- sql reliability in your stack and backup tools.
From my perspective, if you have enough resources (CP and RAM) and tuned your instance for regular mysql backups, it's may be fine enough. RDS definitely is more reliable and gives some performance boost if you take mysql off your ec2. So I would consider cost/time criteria.
