I was never a fan of that feature. IMO if a discussion reaches a point where it can be considered useless enough to make the decision of sinking it wouldn't it be more logical to just delete all the bad stuff that makes it useless or even just delete it?
Deletion should be very wisely considered in forums because database sizes tend to grow considerably with time and can be a PITA to maintain it properly when it starts reaching years of existence.
