We do it a little different here, we have Tags (Primary and Secondary, which can be nested or not). Primary tags are like categories, whereas secondary tags are either like boards, or just helpful descriptors to make discussions distinct.
Make sure you enable the Tags extension, and you'll find settings to set up the tags page as the default home screen.
