So now you have to pay $10 per month to get decent performance out of Flarum… Another monthly payment for private messages if that extension ever arrives… I had high hopes for Flarum, but its lack of features, paid extensions for basic functionality and glacial progress over the years is making Discourse or other, more traditional forums more and more appealing.

SnakePromise I think it's because it's a third party extension, but it's on team focus increase performance on next releases, including the search performance and etc. I hope also that for essential things like basic ads input and etc we have native functionalities.

That isn't a fair statement to make. I'm a developer, and if you consider the core you're getting for free, with its well designed and thought out structure, plus the myriad of free extensions, it does make sense for the Dev team to charge a nominal fee per month for this extension.

You need to consider the literally thousands of hours in terms of development time for the core that nobody will ever get back, and in reality, a paid for system would cost you much more then $10 per month.

Flarum already performs well on usual communities. Once you reach a certain level of scale it doesn't yet, but that's something we will be tackling in future releases.

SnakePromise Another two cents from a Flarum fanboy... It performs great with the right hosting and if your community is small to medium sized. Most every open source software I've run into, starts to have an issue here or there if you have a massive community. But, if your community is that massive, hopefully you have members who pay or donate so that you can afford a third party premium extension.

I should correct myself that flarum also performs well on larger communities. https://webdeveloper.com is a good example, but they run it on a pretty powerful droplet. Giffgaff will be operating at an even larger scale on kubernetes. Bokt.nl with 100 million posts will probably be running on bare metal and the prognosis looks very good.

There are currently some minor trivialities like the statistics extension which simply takes too long and thus blocks the admin. The other problem right now is an issue with search which we will tackle this release.

Aside from that we do have plans to revisit performance on an application wide level before our stable release. Being able to rely no only on our own testing but also on actual experience of communities at scale will be a great benefit.
