There's an issue for this on flarum/core since earlier last year, flarum/core1355. It basically describes ideas for custom search drivers that extensions (?) can add (or maybe are included with Flarum, possibly both).

Since Algolia is super fast and free to certain extent it would be awesome if someone comes up with a extension or adding it into core .

Can we expect any improvements for search in 1.0 ? And what would be the name of version after 1.0 > 1.1 ?

Hari Versions after 1.0 will follow SemVer, so:

Major Releases (first digit) can/will contain breaking changes that require extension updates/modifications
Minor Releases (second digit) can add fuctionality in a backward compatible manor (AKA extensions don't need to be updated, or very minor updates)
Patch Releases (third digit) contains bug fixes that are backwards compatible

The exact specifics can be found at https://semver.org/

Most likely the version after 1.0 will probably be 1.0.1 to fix any bugs that are found.

Is there performance issues with native search engine ? I'm interested by the question because I have 500k posts to migrate from FluxBB (FluxBB have performance issue in search)...

llaumgui Flarum Discuss has _130k posts. Judging purely from the API response times, filtering discussions seems to take 100-200ms, while searching takes 200-300ms. Assuming that the extra time comes entirely from search and that time scales linearly with number of posts (https://makandracards.com/makandra/12813-performance-analysis-of-mysql-s-fulltext-indexes-and-like-queries-for-full-text-search), search should still work reasonably fast for your use case. Of course, this is complete speculation, but I dont think you should have too many issues for now.

Search drivers are technically possible now by overriding container bindings for the Searcher classes (which would allow substituting arbitrary logic). In the future, we hope to support cleaner mechanisms for doing this.
