Backend & infinity scroll performance

I just want to ask, is this it?
I mean, overall performance we can expect from Flarum? OR it is just WIP? In compare with with nodebb, we can achieve faster, equal or slower performance in final version? I know @Franz is MASTER 🙂 of backend speed so I just ask. Not like, I'm not satisfied with current state, but just asking what you guys think about it.

Infinity scroll is such a great thing, totally renew experience about fast forward browsing. It just amazing. It is very good but, it is possible to be even faster when it comes to fetch data? I'm just curious. From my perspective you've done on frontend everything crazy fast, as I know. But I want to know your perspective.

Flarum is still simple ATM, when it comes to functionality, adding more extensions will slow down it I guess. Right?

This is a difficult question to answer.

As far as the frontend is concerned, we've done our best and achieved a great speedup with the change from Ember.js to Mithril.

The backend will see more changes that will affect performance:
- We still have an issue open to perform a query audit, that will likely be a boost.
- In the process of decoupling from Laravel, we'll get rid of some of the overhead that Laravel brings along, but we don't need.
- Finally, of course, we'll pay a penalty for adding more features / extensions. Hard to say how large this will be, but all the must-have features are in core right now.

So, all in all, it's likely that the current speed is a good indicator for how fast Flarum will be when it's final. I hope that's a good thing. 🙂

HolyPhoenix This is the lowest tier ($5/month) DigitalOcean droplet, with 512 MB of RAM and 1 CPU. Ubuntu 14.04 and nginx. It also runs the esoTalk website/forum and various other small websites. It's located in Singapore so that may affect latency for some of you. (I'll probably move it to US West Coast for beta.)

The current speed is amazing, but I am curious of the specs of the server this is currently running on, since hardware could make a big difference to the performance as well.

I have a 1024 Gig Ram VPS. Not sure what my CPU is. I should probably figure that out. I imagine this forum is currently running on similar specs?

Toby The server located in Singapore is really fast to China. ,-)
I think it's necessary that flarum should support cache like memcache because when a forum has millons of posts and users, the MySQL will be a 'bottleneck' of performance. I have read the code of esoTalk that the cache class only cache the user groups and nodes. Everytime esotalk handle a http request it will do many queries with MySQL.

Hey, thanks for that info Toby! I've been looking at DO as a possibility for future server upgrades, so I'm really happy to have a real-world demo of the sort of performance I could expect from their lowest-tier droplet. It's really quite impressive.

Cavid Agree, so @Franz I think Flarum can be even faster, after optimization and more expanded cache.

DigitalOcean droplets are great for quick deployment, but as an Australian, I am pretty supportive of Binary Lane. They have racks in Brisbane and Sydney and their customer support is absolutely exceptional. Steve does an amazing job. They're slightly more expensive, but I am happy to spend the extra for the services they offer.

I'd really like to host in Japan if possible, but Singapore and Oz might be good alternatives if I can't find a something I like here.

Linode do very good boxes in Japan, Singapore and US. I like their OOB management.

Yes, I was looking at Linode ... but by the time I found them they had sold out all their resources in Tokyo.

Hopefully they'll have more (or DO will have acted on the petition for droplets in Japan) by the time I get around to upgrading.
