Are you talking about "Someone posts in a discussion I'm following" or "Someone replies to one of my posts"?
"Someone posts in a discussion I'm following" is a notification preference tied to flarum/subscriptions and "Someone replies to one of my posts" is tied to core (if I'm not mistaken).
