It is on the 0.1.0 Roadmap. Whether that means it will become part of Beta 6 or beyond, I don't know.
It would absolutely be an extension, though, just like other parts of Flarum (like SSO login, post formatting and other features are extensions). If a member of the community decides to create an extension before Flarum does, then we may have multiple options, but that's not a bad thing at all. The beauty of the extensions concept is that each one can provide a different approach to solving the same problem (and there are many, as discussed here).
I hear you on the drawbacks, it's the unfortunate nature of being beta software. Stick with us (and you've already found github, I think that's the best place to watch the progress) and you'll see wonderful things happen. Glad to have you with us!
