Wrapping Flarum into a mobile 'app'

There are many services out there that wrap websites into mobile apps. We all know these aren't truly 'apps', but just the same I plan on making my forum available in the app store of various mobile platforms.

Yes, I know Flarum is fully mobile yadda yadda and that an app is not needed, but that is not the point of this discussion.

What I'd like to know is how would notifications be handled? Would you see a badge icon on the app when a notification is triggered within Flarum?

Only native (true) apps can do that. Not even pusher can make that happen.

ron_jeremy You could use the standard push notification platforms (GCM or APNs), poll the API or hook into something like Pusher which uses websockets. Depends on if you're looking to make the app generic to any Flarum installation or unique to just one, if the latter you could rely on an extension on the Flarum side like Pusher or another similar service to help facilitate this.

luceos I may be mistaken but there is a notification system in chrome that enables that, in desktop it shows like facebook but in mobile its like native.

santiagobiali But that only works on Chrome, and OP stated they want to be cross-platform compatible. They'd need to either hook into the native push platforms or use Pusher (or something similar). Or go old school with manual GET requests, but that's pretty punishing for bandwidth.

Cross platform is a must. Maybe this is a much deeper rabbit hole than I anticipated considering the technical lingo seen in the replies.
