Flarum won't install with external database

Hello i am using a hosting company that doesn't have maria DB 10.0.5 or above so i decided to use my server downstairs to host a small mysql server to host my flarum sql. but it won't connect everything is portforwarded and it shows 3306 is open under yougetsignal but yet i get an error and nothing even adds into the database any idea why this would be happening? Can you try to telnet the ip address or hostname of the mysql server on port 3306 - for example

telnet mysqlserver 3306

Does it respond, or time out ? You should of course do this from the server where your arre installing flarum

Rhys19 true, but if the mysql server doesn't respond to a telnet port request, then that would suggest a network issue or perhaps a configuration problem.

For example, the most common issue is that mysql is configured to listen on localhost only. In the case, this is problematic as it's a remote server.

[deleted] it may be because i just installed the mysql server from microsoft where would the cfg be located ( i am in C:/Program Files/Mysql/Mysql Server 8.0/ )

i just checked. it's set to 0.0.0.0 (i switched to xampp) and the port is still open for me. (Error: Something went wrong: SQLSTATE[HY000] [2002] Connection timed out)

There can be two causes for this: a) no connection could be set up at all or b) the connection dropped after a while.

Testing that you are able to connect from your remote machine manually would help:

mysql -h<hostname or ip> -p3306

It is very likely that your home connection is too slow for it to respond in time. I also recommend against hosting your database like this, performance will be drastically impacted.

I'd echo this. A remote database will only work if it's on the same network. Latency issues will affect the connection dramatically in terms of user experience.

i've figured out the issue. it wasn't flarum or me it was the host. i made a temp site on InfinityFree and it would install just fine with Pockethold but on my currentt host it won't thanks for the help anyways. (i am trying to get it solved within the hosting provider now)
