Can we create private communities?

A private community is a secure members-only site. You control who can log in, view and participate.

Example uses of private communities:

Private communities for clients or partners
Internal company employee collaboration
Employee discussion forums
Private beta product user discussion and feedback
Membership organizations or professional organizations

Or create groups to manage bulk user assignments to private categories. This could be useful if you we can create multiple private categories and so to to assign sets of users all at once.

That's exactly what Flarum includes out of the box. It's the easiest way to create private areas as you can manually assign groups as needed.

You can also restrict the forum so that login is required to see anything. But if you use that feature you'll also need to restrict registration. We have third-party extensions to allow invite-only registration.

With private categories, we would be able to control user access to specific areas in our community. For example, if you create a private area that is only accessible to employees or specific clients.

clarkwinkelmann I understand that private areas can be restricted to specific groups but what I wanted to ask is whether it is possible to hide the private groups from all other users.

I wanted to host many film societies at my forum. Each of them would want a private section. If all the private sections are visible to all but not accessible, it will create clutter. It would be much cleaner to only see groups which a user has access to. Any way to implement this hiding feature?

arthaus you can create tags that are only visible to specific permission groups, you can also hide these permission groups, for instance I have an Admin permission group no one sees 😉

I'm going to spell out my concern more elaborately, Just to make sure if I understand your suggestion correctly.

If I have 3 user groups: Red, Green and Blue. Each of these groups has a private section in the forum. If I use the correct tags, only users of the respective groups should be able to see their private area, right? Or atleast, that's what I'm trying to achieve.

A guest user who has not logged in, should not be able to see the private sections listed on the side. Same goes for other users who are not in the Red, Green, Blue groups. Only after logging in do Red users see the Red private section and so on.

Tags where "read discussions" is set to a permission group cannot be seen by guests.
