I've been handling some organizational tasks, our planned consultation/hackaton trip to giffgaff was cancelled due to Corona. This means cancelling bookings, requesting refunds and talking about a possibility to use the freed time slot with something else - possibly virtual. Will keep you in the loop about this.

For core I've redone some work related to the user preferences and user notification preferences logic. I feel the changes are now far more transparent by moving deprecated code to its own trait and the remaining user preferences code for the User class to its own permanent trait. A PR will soon follow.

Another quick update from me, this weekend I fixed an issue with the middleware extender (flarum/core2063) and added some final test for the Middleware extender so that these kinds of issues can't happen in the future. I intend to work some more on flarum this week but things are hectic at work due to the sudden possibility of people needing to work from home (I'm a SysAdmin so I'm heavily involved in making that happen)

I've started on a test for the user preferences refactor. It's not as simple as anticipated and with Corona I'm having a hard time getting anything done at all. Home office with kids is crazy 🤪 Hoping it will get better.

Hi everyone! I'm Sasha, and I'm the trainee for this release cycle! I thought I might also share some of what I've been working on. This post will cover my general progress over the past few weeks; future posts will be shorter, but more frequent. So anyway, here's some Pull Requests I've been working on.

A refactor of our Single Sign On (SSO) support (flarum/core2059)
- External login extensions (e.g. log in via github, facebook, wordpress, etc) would be able to use an extender to register themselves in a centralized sso system
- Username/password login, as well as any external authentication provider, could be enabled/disabled in the admin panel.
- If multiple external login options exist, users can link/unlink login providers from their settings page
- Other stuff, check out videos of these features in action at flarum/core2059
CLI commands to enable/disable an extensions, or enable/disable all extensions to make that a little easier
The ability to send a test email while configuring email settings
A CLI command to reset a user's password
A CLI command to change a setting
Adding meta titles and descriptions to pages that should have them
An extender for adding mail drivers
An extender for adding CLI commands
Started a refactor of our policy system, with a dedicated extender for that
Some bugfixes and other minor additions

nexromant Not sure exactly what you mean by full fledged user system, but you can look at https://github.com/flarum/core/milestone/7 for a list of issues that we are currently hoping to fix in stable.

In the meantime, please consider extensions like User Directory and Create User Modal for your user management needs.

Don't take this as an impertinence, but a system of user files would also be useful - for example, a user stores files in their profile and can attach them to a message via the interface, and you can also go to the user 's page and download files...

nexromant All of this will be left to extension, Flarum is designed to be a forum framework which means not forcing any particular features on users. Even "core" features like tags can be disabled.

nexromant Some of these already exist in some form or another through our extensions. Keep in mind that Flarum has a design philosophy built around extendibility: most features can be found in extensions. So although these features are not planned for core in our stable release, they will most likely be eventually created through extensions if enough people need them.

tankerkiller125 you do realize the problem with such an approach, software becomes too fragmented, usually there are multiple extensions doing essentially the same thing and it is hard to judge for a beginner which is better. Or there are no extensions fulfilling a popular demand. Extensions lag behind in updates and get abandoned, requiring administrators to either stay with an old version of flarum or migrate from one extension to another which can take quite a lot of effort. It is not possible to get one click install with all the most popular features. Etc etc etc

SnakePromise We're not unaware of the challenges of this approach, nor have we ignored them. Flarum has long fostered and nurtured its development community, and we try to work pretty closely with extension developers to respond to their needs. We have a development group (Friends of Flarum) dedicated to ensuring that popular extensions do not waste away in an abandoned state when versions upgrade, for example, and many of their developers are also Flarum developers or team members.

Also, it's entirely possible have a one-click install of multiple extensions, you can see my explanation here.

I doubt some developer will start making a new extension while there's already an existing out there. Legit time waste.

Corona has changed the lives of everyone in a split second. I am grateful to be surrounded by such a warm and welcoming community, and by the team that continues to aim for our goal this year. It's not easy, for some it's even extremely tough to keep contributing and I think that deserves our respect.
