OVH hosting

Hello,

I've been contemplating the idea of building a forum for a while and Flarum looks like the best choice.

However, I don't know anything about coding or programming and it looks like a real hassle. I'm ready to learn, but all this jargon is giving me headaches. If I understand well, Flarum is free as long as you find a way to host it? Can I host it on on OVH ?

I'm hosting my website there and was wondering whether it was possible to kill two bird with one stone.

I've tried www.freeflarum.com but it looks like a short-term solution.

FF is a great solution for smaller communities. If you expect more than a few thousand users you're probably best off hosting your own instance.

What is important to understand is that you need composer through terminal/bash/ssh. If your host provides that, you're covered.

That's fine, we all started at the same level. If you have questions, just ask them 👍️ . Using composer to install Flarum sounds like a huge hurdle, but it's reasonably easy to get into.

Right now, I expect less. But on the long term, I expect to grow. I assume it's impossible to migrate once I reach this threshold, correct?

I don't really understand what a composer is. I started following the tutorial to install it on my device (running on macOS) but my host also needs one? I will look into it.

To answer the question for luceos; you need to make sure your choice of hosting service provides you with secure shell (SSH) access. Get in touch with your host before signing up just to make sure.

OVH has like everything, from domains to vps's, dedicated servers, web hosting to whatever u need. So ofcourse u can host it on there + ssh access

I read on some other reply that SSH access is not enough. On some providers, you need to be root to install Composer. Something to check with the host.

meetdilip root access should not be necessary. If it's not installed but you have a real shell access, you should be able to run it from a local composer.phar file instead of installing globally.

Some hostings provide Composer out of the box and usually list it in the same places where they advertise SSH access.

There are even instances where the hosting service would actually install (or at least assist with installation of) Composer and Flarum for you as well.
