Since my real reply isn't in that original discussion I guess I'll post it here....
I started getting interesting in programming and things of that nature when I was about 13 because I really wanted to make a custom Minecraft mod with friends. That took me into learning Java initially, then a personal event caused me to feel like I was loosing control of everything happening in life, if was in this time that I really took a deep dive into programming because it was the one thing I could in fact control. During this time I also found myself two AWESOME mentors who really helped upgrade my skills from "copy from StackOverflow" to real development skills.
Once I really started getting decent at some PHP I got added to a upcoming MC Server (that failed to launch twice) as their "SysAdmin" where I also quickly became head of website development. From there it just kind of took off. When I got to my junior year I took computer networking courses at the local career center until I graduated my senior year. It's there that I really feel in love with the SysAdmin side of things.
So I do SysAdmin stuff 80% of the time as my job, the remaining 20% is spent working on Flarum, personal projects, and the odd ball work project (mostly automating my job with PowerShell).
TL;DR: MC Modding got me interested, life event caused me to become addicted, dug in deeper afterwords.
Now how I joined Flarum is a story in itself (one that I have in fact posted)
