Split 3 from X and merge into Y

I think I am doing it wrong. I am able to use split from here and split to here for 3 posts in a thread X. It now shows

Specify the title for the new discussion

How can we add it to another thread under the same tag ?

I tried the dropdown and used " Merge " option in thread Y. It shows

Choose discussion(s) to merge into .....

Not the spilt posts. It looks confusing to me. Any help will be great.

meetdilip you first have to split the three out then merge that new discussion back into another discussion. A better tool is bound to surface beyond stable.

Thanks. I did as you suggested. All 3 threads are under the same tag " General " . The new thread " icons " is not getting detected when I try to use " merge into me " option under the thread I wish to merge into.

What to do now ?

meetdilip those extensions don't have cancel features as far as I know. You'll have to fix by hand or restore from backup.

If you split out the same 3 posts again, they all arrange themselves by post date/time. So you can "fix" it just by restoring posts to the discussion you want them in, it just might be tedious to do so if you erroneously merge large discussions together.

meetdilip You can split them to a new discussion with the same title. It'll no longer have the same discussion ID, but it will function the exact same otherwise. The only thing broken will be previous links to that discussion (which is something that perhaps a future Merge extension will need to account for).

Everything worked as intended other than

It merged in the wrong direction
The topic title changed
Lost the no. of views
404 like error

My fix so far

I cannot do anything
Renamed the topic
I am mainly sad about this part. It had around 4.5 k views. Now the topic shows 25 🙁
I hope there is nothing bad going to happen. Google bots are smart enough
