Hold up - Please chmod this directory

Hey guys,

This day marks day number four of me installing Flarum. 😊 Hopefully, I can install it before Firday the 13th! 😛

I almost have it working now. Instead of welcoming me, it now tells me to "hold up" and then talks about permissions.

The /var/www/koders2 directory is not writable.
Please chmod this directory to 0775.

The /var/www/koders2/public/assets directory is not writable.
Please chmod this directory and its contents to 0775.

The /var/www/koders2/storage directory is not writable.
Please chmod this directory to 0775.

I discussed permissions earlier with @clarkwinkelmann in another thread. While I do know (by now) how to set these permissions and I have already done it before on the VPS (when I could not get past the "Killed" Composer message), I forgot to do this on the testing directory on my local VM.

So I executed following commands...

sudo chmod 775 /var/www/koders2
sudo chmod -R 775 /var/www/koders2/public/assets
sudo chmod 775 /var/www/koders2/storage

But I still can't get past that stop message. What could this be? 🤔

SamirGunic Most likely the owner of the file is wrong, the files not only need the permissions to be correct but also owned by the correct users. On many linux operating systems the users is www-data which can be set using sudo chown -R www-data /var/www/koders2

So what does this mean then for my future deployment of Flarum on a live VPS? I need to change the owner to www-data? And to set permission level to 775? In other words I do not need to create a special user for Flarum installation?

On the Install Flarum page we have following fields...

MySQL Database
MySQL Username
MySQL Password
Table Prefix
Admin Username
Admin Email
Admin Password
Confirm Password

Are all of the fields required? Can I skip Admin Email for example? I am only installing in a VM at the moment, so it's not so important, but I guess this email will be used to reset password for the administrator account?

I have MySQL server installed, but I have not set up a database or user for Flarum to use, so I can't proceed with installation until I do that. Flarum does not take care of this automatically. What is Table Prefix? And what do I need to consider when creating a database and username for Flarum?

SamirGunic Everything is required except for the table prefix field.
