Flarum Cloud Non-Latinate Language in Username

Currently, the cloud version doesn't support Chinese usernames by default even though the Chinese language package extension is installed (The username may only contain letters, numbers, and dashes.)

I thought in general there should be a huge demand for the ability to use non-Latinate characters. Is there any method to use Chinese characters in username at all? Thank you for your time and comments.

This is actually exactly why we made the new nicknames extension! If you enable that, users can set any string (which the admins can limit via regex) as their username.

There's also a PR in review to the fof username request extension that would add the ability to restrict / request nickname changes

I'm a self-taught techie but non-coder; with some tweaking, it still doesn't work for a new user to register with Chinese characters.

Could you take a look and help tweak the code to allow a user to register with pure Chinese characters (李小龙), pure English characters (Tom), or a mix of Chinese and English characters (Tim王), please?

This is correct. Users would be able to set a nickname after registration. The username still shows up in the URL and in the raw text of mentions (not in the displayed mention badge itself) but that's about it.

By "Cloud version", I assume that you mean that your forum is FreeFlarum forum with the flarum.cloud domain.

I've just tested the extension with default settings (no RegEx) and it works fine with Chinese characters and Latin (example: https://beta.flarum.cloud/u/Sans), so I assume that there is something wrong on your side. If you tell me your forum URL, I might be able to help (also note that FreeFlarum is not affiliated with Flarum, so the Flarum Team unfortunately can't help you if there's something wrong with the server files - if you have a FreeFlarum forum).

I don't mind the URL too much, but not being able to mention someone without having to investigate their username seems less than ideal to me. I have not used that extension yet so maybe it's better than I expect.

If you type @ and then Chinese characters, will the software suggest fitting nicknames and convert them into corresponding usernames?

By the way: On the FreeFlarum Beta the forum statistics extension doesn't seem to work nicely with the nickname extension. The link to the last member Sans | 不带 goes to https://beta.flarum.cloud/u/Sans%20|%20%E4%B8%8D%E5%B8%A6 which fails to resolve.

Pollux the mentions GUI should work properly: you can type in a display name and the autocomplete dropdown should fill in as expected. It'll just insert the username instead of the display name. Reason for this is that display names could include spaces and periods and all that, which makes it hard to match via regex.

That sounds good. It was clear to me before, that the usernames had to be inserted, I just wasn't sure if the suggestions would accept nicknames as search arguments. The way you described it seems the most sensible approach to me.
