We don't use SES for a Flarum Installation so we can't tell you about using SES with Flarum. We however do have experience using SES for some of our products. SES is made to be simple. It is just about sending low cost emails. The AWS API is very extensive and their wrappers work very well.
I feel like choosing SES for your emails is a good idea. It's not as advanced as for example Sendpulse but it isn't trying to be.
