jlfguthrie you could use fof/pages, and create your own "welcome, please signup for x, y, z!" page and make it as fancy as you'd like through html/css, and use the direct links extension and link to /signup from your invite/welcome page. Would just need a creative way to get the user to be able to share it, so they know about the link, either via another discussion, header, footer link, etc.
