Updating Flarum without SSH

I have been running Flarum on a remote host without SSH access. I accomplished this by the trick someone else had written up where I downloaded and installed Composer locally, downloaded Flarum and then uploaded the results to my host.

What would happen if I cloned the flarum/flarum repo and uploaded the contents overtop of what I have installed? In theory should this work? How does flarum/core relate to flarum/flarum exactly (ie. where would I find flarum/core files inside flarum/flarum?)

I know this is all very hack'ish, but sadly there's not much option for those of us without SSH access. ?

zethon theoretically you should be able to upload the new files and run the upgrade from your admin page, bút you might already hit errors before you can log in and thus never make it onto the admin area.

Better thing to do is upgrade a backup of your live installation locally with composer, run the upgrade and then copy files and database over to production. No guarantees whatsoever!

zethon LOL , I am the one who made a tutorial to install composer locally and all...It was a tutorial for users who want to use flarum on shared hosting....
Dude , if you want , I can make another video showing how to update it....
Let me tell you in short.. Just use composer (locally) to update flarum and then just upload all the files to your remote host and override them if asked...
And there you go...If you face any problems , do tell me....
Always backup all the files in your remote host and all the databases..

Yeah, this is pretty much exactly why we can't support installations without composer at this time. It's a lot of work to upgrade, and piecing together the final puzzle is not without risk. Depending on your level of confidence, you could try backing up and importing your database to a local install, upgrading that via composer, and then reuploading the files and database to your web host.

No guarantees it'll work. Better to either try a fresh install or wait until we have a non-SSH solution.

luceos Hey there..Please fix the bugs asap...Forgot password works and we recieve email but when we open that link , we recieve 500 error..
And please anounce when you are gonna release first stable version...
Till then I am working on an awesome poject which i'll combine with flarum and its gonna be super awesome..Flarum has very limited features in admin area..My project will add countless features in flarum and will allow to change not just colours but the layout itself..!!
Waiting for the day when stable build is released..

Infinitycr4k3r Doesn't Composer only update the files that are packaged in a release? I was specifically asking about updating the latest files on GitHub.

Maybe my assumptions about Composer are wrong, I'm not very familiar with it.

zethon When you update with composer locally , you also have the previous flarum files in same folder that you earlier downloaded throught composer.. The files get updated and then you can transfer them to host and it'll do the trick...Or you can simply delete all flarum files locally and download them again with composer.. Save database , delete files in host and then upload new files and restore database...
Many ways to do it....Just do some experiments....

Infinitycr4k3r I don't think that addresses my original question, unless Composer does some kind of 'git clone' or 'git pull' behind the scenes. My understanding is that Composer only pulls down the latest files that are "published" by the content creators and not the latest files from SCM.

zethon You are just getting confused and confusing me as well....Why don't you just download latest files with composer and upload them straight to host...!!!
Just leave github for now...Read the official installation docs..
Keep things as simple as possible...
And do tell what you are trying to accomplish....Are you creating a website or are you a dev working on flarum...??!

Infinitycr4k3r I want to updated my forum with the latest files on GitHub. I misunderstood what Composer did. I figured there was some kind of publishing/packaging that Composer used and whatever files were in that package was what it downloaded, and not necessarily the latest files in Git. But now that I know Composer uses 'git clone'.

Composer actually uses packagist, where the list of all PHP packages are stored in JSON files. Packagist behind the scenes creates a tarball of the package, whenever the package has a tagged version to speed up downloads. If no tag is available (and as such no tarball) it will do a git clone. In all other situations it uses the tarball. The above is only the case if you use composer with --prefer-dist which is by default on.

Well logically knowing that changes nothing..
There are only 2 guides available for installing flarun...And both use composer to download flarum files..???So it should be obvious that the files you get from composer are latest..And when you use composer , it even shows the version of the flarum you are downloading..
If there was something different to do with github , we would have had topics on it...
This logic was quiet enough to prove that composer is connected to github...More than that was not gonna change anything..??

Infinitycr4k3r Hahah! It is! I come from a C++/server-side programming background, so, I'm comfortable around code and hacks, but I'm not familiar with all the tools used these days for web-development. I'd never heard of Composer until Flarum.

Infinitycr4k3r Nope. The code is from the beta-5 release, untouched.

I believe this is a bug in Flarum, as I've seen this behavior a few times. I cannot sign into the board in a regular Chrome browser, but in an Incognito window it works fine (I haven't tried simply clearing cookies, yet). And actually, once I sign in successfully, it works again in a regular Chrome window.

Try now, I wonder if registration works now that I've successfully logged in.
