Byobu is a private discussion that work little bit differently from a private message system. Byobu can be a good solution for private message on my point but it is not thought of to work as private message system. poVoq You could probably link your user DB to a xmpp server and add ConverseJS to your forum. Relatively simple and gives you a Facebook messenger like of chat. JSXC would be another such option for embedding a XMPP client in your webpage.
