Please Help Needed

Hello,

I am totally new to this thing. I am no Web-Dev so do not know html from CSS... And I am in the process of merging two sites into one big one...

All I want is a blog style site that is integrated with forum. I have downloaded and installed almost entire Flarum extension library including the Blog one, but I have no idea how to proceed from here. I been at it for over 36 hours now, and the more I think I got it, the further I get..

I am in desperate need of help. I hope someone here can lend a helping hand to a n00b like me... If anyone can help we can discuss what I need exactly over on Discord or anywhere else you want.. Am poor on time...

Anyway thanks to whoever agrees to help..

Can I suggest a simple plan of action ? Get rid of the extensions for now. Keep the core + basic extensions. Set the tags. That should give you a clean and minimal forum.

Once you have done that, take a backup. Now it is time to install the blog extension.

Let us make sure that up to this has been accomplished before trying additional features.

Thanks for suggestion but that's how I started... Then began installing extensions one by one trying to get what I want to no avail...

Anyway, current setup is a test one for learning so I can give access no issues if needed...

May I know what is troubling you ? If you are setting it up for production and have only core + basic plugins, let me know. I can try to help with basic things.

PS: What is your forum about ?

The thing troubling me is sometimes some widgets work other times they just refuse to load. I have no idea how tags work I created some test ones but am more used to a traditional forum layout like man forum/subforum etc...

As for topic of my site since it's a merger of two separate ones, one is tech in general other is for my Linux Distro... So the idea of tags is confusing to say the least...

Still don't understand.. Am that bad.. There are two boxes one called primary in which I can add main and sub tags same for secondary am confused still...

for the tag, imagine that primary tag is

Food

then secondary tags can be

fruit
salads
sweets

so an users that want to start a new discussion about a "candy" can choose primary tag as "food" and secondary as "sweets", to keep all organized

DarkXero if you want you can use only primary tags, is up to you, secondary tags help to keep the forum more organized

That is where my confusion still is.. What's the point of secondary if can do same in primary ? Secondary is useless at this stage.. Coz that's exactly what I been doing.. So primary is main secondary is just there for in case wanna use ?

DarkXero i don't know how to explain this in english but, imagine a thread that can fit 2 primary tags....

for example here the secondary tags is "solved" (is possible to add this tag for solved discussions)

See ? Am still thinking normal forum, while those are just tags. I still don't understand why tags are used instead of categories like normal forum. Is it because this is based off of Discourse so chat like thing ?

I don't see myself using secondary as it is useless in my case.. I keep solved where they are just add [Solved] to thread title done..

I've always named Secondary tags Helper tags. They work more like a tagging system does, you can apply these to any discussion no matter the category they are in. Primary and sub-tags are for categorization. There's an issue on our TODO that talks about clarifications to this terminology of tags. So we are aware their description can be improved.

Thanks for that... If I wasn't pressed for time I would spend longer going through all that.. Slowly... But I will try my best to understand better..

As for blog am still confused as to why I cannot add or remove widgets n panels from it.. Like I want to remove forum nav from the side add other widgets etc.. Seems I cannot do that...

That's a choice of the extension developer. Understand that many extensions are still in their childhood and need to further mature over time. For an extension that is available completely for free, I think it already does a great job. But it might not always completely suit your needs or taste, that's a given.

I understand... Oh well... Seems flarum still needs time to mature, not suitable for my case who is in a hurry...
