Icon of subcatergory instead of user avatar

I would like to change the user avatar next to the discussion title to the icon the the chosen subcategory.
I know, quite a misuse of the intended use :-)

I am quite new to css so i could not figure is out myself. Is is possible with css alone? Could you give me some clues in which direction I have to look?

Not really, you'd need a discussion to override that part of the component.
