500 error on install

Hello!

Pardon any obvious errors, server wrangling is not my forte. ?

I got Composer and Flarum installed on my server, and got the installation screen when I went to the forum's URL. Hooray! I made a new SQL database for this forum and entered the host/un/pw details on the installation page, and then ... 500 error.

Something went wrong:
500 Internal Server Error
Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@[forumname].io and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Any idea where I went wrong here? I have looked for an error log but I can't find one; I tried php info | grep error and similar but it's turning up nothing.

Help is greatly appreciated! ?

Internal Server Error

Internal Server error means it will likely have more details on the webserver error log.
I don't know what webserver you're using (often apache2 or nginx) but for a example you can locate apache2 error logs at /var/log/apache2/error.log
If you can find it, please post relevant content here with concealing private details (like ip address) in between two sets of backticks `

Just noticed also that I can no longer get to the Flarum installation page ... it now takes me to a generic 500 error page.

Kulga Thanks for your reply! Here's the last entries in error.log, which seem to refer to the Flarum .htaccess file and an internal error file on my server (IP addresses and file paths are changed but the structure is the same):

Kulga I just figured it out - it was an error in the .htaccess file. I had read that I needed to add the line 'RewriteBase /' to the .htaccess but apparently that broke everything?

 chown -R www-data:www-data var/www/html/forum.example.com

go to

 /etc/apache2/sites-available/default.conf

And add virtualhost

<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName forum.example.com
DocumentRoot /var/www/forum.example.com
  <Directory "/var/www/forum.example.com">
	  AllowOverride All
  </Directory>
</VirtualHost>
