It depends. If the extension already does a good job with the MySQL fulltext search, then it will continue to do so. This (search) extension does not impact original Flarum endpoints and queries at all. What it does is replace the search that Flarum has with one that is powered by elastic.

murdocklawless if you install elasticsearch on your server then yes. It is a bit memory hungry though.

Hi,
In version 1.2.1, I suppose that we can use only the exact match searching for discussion titles.
I want to know how to use MySQL full-text search without Elasticsearch because I have a small community.
Does anyone have a solution for this?

But I want to know how to use the partial match search for the contents of the discussions.

Ease112 stock flarum search supports full text search already, it's just that due to the nuances of character encoding, it doesn't work well with CJK languages. This is something we hope to eventually address but it's pretty difficult to fix for technical reasons.

I never got as far as testing implementations, but I've used Sphinx in the past, and this is the community fork from that project. I was trying to find something that adhered to open source licensing standards rather than tying a key feature to private services.

Sonic looks interesting and I hadn't come across it previously, but I have reservations about new, single-person projects like that. I also wonder how useful a schema-less search is for the forum space which is exceedingly schema-heavy. 😅

It's also not really an Elasticsearch alternative, it doesn't feature ranking for example which is quite an important feature.

I've personally run tests with Meilisearch and Typesense with over 600k posts indexed. I don't like how Typesense works, it's still definitely a beta and I couldn't get accurate or consistent search results with it. Meilisearch is instead much better in my experience. Also, I'm not seeing the issue mentioned in the first post, search results are always returned in a few milliseconds, usually <15 ms (unless I use Docker volumes on Windows/macOS, but the documentation is clear about that).

I know you didn't ask but I thought this might be helpful to someone ahah 🙂

While both of those are great, and I would love to see search drivers supporting more search engines, these wouldn't really work for the default Flarum search since we can't assume that shared host users will be able to load this. Packing a precompiled version of something like Meilisearch is technically possible, but quite challenging and not very scalable.
