Flarum quite slow and random errors

Hi,

I'm trying Flarum for the first time. The installation was fine, with Composer, etc. But the forum seems to be slow, between 1200 and 2500 ms only to get the html with a page refresh.

All extensions are disabled.

Even the search engines find the website slow. After more than one week Google doesn't index the pages, with a "site overloaded" message in the Google console. In DuckDuckGo I can see this. It's the message "an error happens, please cleans your cache and reload the page":

Sometimes When I make an action the loading icon doesn't stop. For example edit the settings or a message, activate/decativate an extension, etc. I activated the debug mode but it's not very verbose. I tried with or without extensions and it's almost the same.

After the initial load browing the forum seems to be fast.

The web host is https://www.o2switch.fr/ It's usually pretty fast (for example with old WordPress https://64k.be/)
They are using gzip, Memcached, Redis, Varnish and LSCache.

At this point I don't now what I can do to speed up the forum, if it's my configuration or the web hosting.

Do you have debug enabled in your config.php?

luceos Indeed... 280ms without debug mode 😄 I didn't know debug mode was slowing down at this point. I enabled it because as I said sometimes I have the loading icon doesn't stop turning. I'll continue to investigate by enabling the extensions one by one but so far I didn't find the culprit with the debug or the logs :/

For example it just happens only when editing a message:

Debug mode still on and all extensions disabled.

It worked but after something like 1 minute 😨 It's the same with or without debug mode.

It seems to be related to Firefox. With Chrome the message edit is instant.

ced64k it seems like both DNS resolving and actual connection to the webserver took 58 seconds, so I'd say it must be related to the network.

Is the DNS and webserver hosted by the same company and/or the same location?

Are you able to try to access the website via another internet connection to see whether it might be related to your personal connection to the web?

The website seems to load pretty fast for me from Switzerland, though I didn't register to try and create/edit posts.

If only the request was taking long, it could be related to emails being sent in the background. But if the DNS resolve is just as slow, it probably isn't related to Flarum or email.

clarkwinkelmann the domain is registred at OVH with o2switch name servers. The hosting is at o2switch.

I tested with a new Firefox profile, even the login doesn't work:

I tested on Firefox mobile with 4G, it's same. On Chrome Mobile everything is working. Edge desktop too. So it seems related to DNS and Firefox.

What do you mean by emails sent in the background ?

MartinJD yes the loading is fast now, it was due to debug mode.

I found a post with the same slow DNS resolution and a guy said that it was related to DNS over HTTPS but it's not activated in my Firefox.

Can it be related to Let's Encrypt ?

I think I found, I was using the Google DNS and with my provider DNS it seems to be working 🤞

It's weird because in Chrome/Edge everything is working.

It also feels very snappy to me. Does this happen when logged in only or also when logged out?

Only logged when performing actions like editing a message or change a setting in the administration and only in Firefox. I would say all the POST API. Sometimes it takes one minute sometimes it's instant.
It happens on desktop or mobile, with wifi or 4G. All other browsers are fine.

On Firefox Mobile the login itself doesn't work. With debug mode I got this message after a few minutes:

ced64k when it shows "null" as the error message, it's generally because the response didn't contain JSON. And generally if it doesn't contain JSON, it was an error and an error might be logged to the Flarum log file or webserver system file. If it's a PHP warning/notice it might not be logged anywhere unfortunately so it's hard to tell on mobile since developers tools cannot be used to read the raw response.

To add more suggestions related to the original Firefox issue, maybe check which browser extensions you have enabled (ad blockers, etc.). Maybe you have some sort of proxy or special feature flags enabled (once I had issues because my Firefox had locked the max TLS version it would use. But I don't see how this would affect DNS resolve time so probably not relevant...)

You could also try the same Firefox in private browsing as it should disable most of the browser extensions, and see if there's any difference.
