The ideal solution would be to add a private messages icon in the dashboad/header with a count of unread messages. That's what FoF Byōbu is missing.

I've never seen someone call a message board core to a chat app. 🙂

The only 'personal chat' extension I see with an abandoned tag is Whisper is this the one you are talking about @Yolo? .. if not a link would be helpful.

RelicSystem yes this was a great simple tool to message. We miss it! The Neon Chat is nice, but atm buggy an overloaded. we just want a simple solution - nothing special

Valeyard None of my users liked Byobu. It's different for the sake of being different, not being better. People found it confusing. There are certain expectations people have regarding PM system and one should have very good reasons to depart from those.

RelicSystem byobu also has performance issue that slows down the loading speed, which is an known problem.

I do have a forked version of Whisper which solves some issues which people have faced: https://github.com/davwheat/whisper

You'd need to set up a workbench repository in your composer.json then manually git clone it to your Flarum instance to use it, though, and I don't plan on actively supporting it with features or bugfixes at the moment.

Same here. People were complaining about missing PM functionality so I installed Byobu but there are some privacy issues.

Whisper is from Kyrne who appears to be vanished (Bought another extension from him - lifetime access. Short time later he made it free for all and I needed some help with performance issues but he never answered. I am not the only one who is a bit pissed off [t]his behaviour.).

I'm personally not a big fan of the way Byobu mixes with any other topics (instead of being its own separated things), even if there are some good aspects to it (a setup encouraging group discussions, possibility to make a private discussion public afterwards...)

That said, i would be careful with whisper: sure it seems more convenient, but I have countless experiences of forums which lost a lot of their fun and lively topics when a chatbox was installed – and whisper, with its live messaging, could work a little like that, even if it's private.

It's a fair point. Globally having lower friction for the less valuable communication mode is likely a poor choice for community health. There's probably ways to account for that, but it's something to consider.

Are there other private communication modes folks have tried for their communities?

I'm not even sure what you meant by that to be honest. Are you pretending to misunderstand me to appear funny?

Anyway, how many major forum software platforms don't have PMs as a standard feature? That should serve as an answer to how 'fringe' the need for PMs is.

Two things have been discussed here:

OP's request to reinstate a private chat feature that is similar like Whisper, @davwheat seems to have a fork. I would suggest he publishes that as MIT under minimal maintenance (look at how @clarkwinkelmann does that for some of his extensions). Clearly mention fixes and features are only implemented when paid for; direct to Blomstra (subcontracting) or Discuss (bounty) for options.

Suggestions by others about Byobu relating to:

the private discussions mingling with others
the privacy implication of messages being read by staff
the need for a menu item that shows a count

I think these need to be separated if the expectation is that someone is going to need to take action on them. These can probably be moved into the Byobu discussion or started un Proposal with a potential outcome of being crowdfunded using a bounty.

Yeah, my fork has a few patches that someone commissioned me to make a while back. I don't support the fork, but it should be useable in place of the original extension.

I have.
But to respect our motto of "underpromise, overdeliver", we first have to complete the extensions we have lined up for their first release (Meta, GDPR, Realtime, Forseti) or those in need of more attention (Search, Payments). In addition you can understand that we would only build such a chat extension in case we would be able to meet most of the demand while guaranteeing a quality product. So, for now, the answer is that we're considering it, but nothing more.
