In my old time on phpBB forums, there was a nice extension using Captcha in a more pleasant way than identify objects in hard-to-read images: you had to sort options between two lists.

It's pretty much a gadget, but can be more pleasant than the usual re-captcha, and more adapted to the subject of the forum! (here: sorting director's nationalities for a cinema forum)
