Login issue after installation

The issue is that I can't login! I installed Flarum a few days ago. It seemed to be working fine. I poked around various pages, and roles (user, admin, etc). Everything seemed to work find. Tonight I can't log back in.

I expected to be logged in, but get an error instead.
I turned on debug and only see this from a DEBUG link in a red bar: POST http://localhost/~randy/flarum/public/login
I set mail_driver to log, but don't see a log file.
Tried to clear cache, and got a bunch of permission messages in the cache directory. Cleared those up and got a bunch of permission issues in extension directories.

Thanks for the quick response (I had gone to bed).

Sorry if my post was ambiguous. I meant that I didn't see any log files in storage/logs
I had also changed their permissions to 775 for storage and logs

Initially I set mail_driver to log because I thought perhaps I had simply forgotten the password, and couldn't retrieve it since I had not yet set up email, and that was a suggested solution. Since I couldn't see the log, I verified that I do have the right password by comparing it to the hash in the db here: https://bcrypt-generator.com/

Now I'm wondering if I just have a corrupt installation.
For the initial installation, I updated the config.php and .htaccess and some directory access privileges.
It was running after the install, I poked around a little, but didn't make changes or save any data other than the setup stuff. (no additional users, no settings, no posts, nothing).

Now I can't log in as mentioned. Don't see log files. Don't see errors in the Apache log.
I've changed ownership of every file and directory to the user that Apache and Php run as (_www) on my Macbook. And changed permissions on everything to 777.

Cleared the cache multiple times. (it does manage to write to the cache)

It still won't run. Well, it does. The main page comes up with no errors. But clicking anything or trying to log in results in errors (red indicator bar on page), but no log file.

**Question: ** is there some sort of obvious disconnect that would let me in at the end of the install, but not work after the admin user has to log back in?
