Migrating forum, question about post counts

I have a VanillaForums forum I'm going to migrate to Flarum - Vanilla had a way to re-generate the post counts for discussions based on the posts in each discussion. Is there a way to update counts like that in Flarum without updating it manually through SQL queries?

Yeah something like that wouldn't be that hard to write. I haven't seen any resources that show how yet though. I might have a snippet that does it through php.

Flarum has fof/formatting as an extension where you can allow some elements. You can pretty much allow other elements too with some edits in your extend.php.

Nice! I just made a test post and noticed it included some HTML by default, I think this will do nicely.

As far as the counts go, if you have a snippet for that I could use, that would be great! This software seems great and I appreciate you getting back to me so quickly.

I pushed it into my extender example repository: https://github.com/luceos/flarum-extender-examples/blob/master/app/Command/RecountPostsCommand.php, I don't know about your skill but you will need to do some changes to composer.json and add the command in your local extend.php. I can clarify further should there be a need.

So I've added the autoload section, copied over the app folder, and added the command to extend.php - the only thing I'm not sure on is how to trigger it. Does it run anytime a request to the forum is made?

zjmw00 also run composer dumpautoload then php flarum the command should be in that list now 😉

I got a chance to try this out and it ran through all of the discussions, but it didn't seem to update the post counts.

Is this what those PHP scripts should be updating?

zjmw00 yeah seems the command hasn't updated the comments_count field in the database, can you confirm that field exists in your discussions table?

It does, however they're all still at a value of 1 after running the recount.

I was able to get it working but had to save the discussion object as I think that step was missing. I also called 'refreshLastPost()' on the discussion as well.

$discussion->refreshCommentCount(); //added: $discussion->refreshLastPost(); $discussion->save();
