Github Sponsors support

I see that there is a Github Sponsors extension for Flarum but it hasn't been active since 1.0 and there is no documentation about how it works.

Here's the idea:
1) My Flarum forum only accepts Github OAuth2 usernames and logins.
2) I want to restrict access to my Flarum forum based on whether the user has sponsored my project and made a donation.

How would I accomplish this?

This could probably be contributes to the original GitHub sponsors extension. There's a post authentication hook that this extension could use to assign permissions during log in. It would probably also require another way to periodically remove access if a sponsor no longer donates.

You can try to build this yourself using https//docs.flarum.org/extend, pay a developer to do it under the services tag or try to crowdfund it under the proposals Tag.

I'm thinking it may be better to assign paid users to a designated group that can view private threads (fof/byobu) ?

I have external Github Sponsors webhook event php code running via cron that is triggered when a user has paid - how would I assign them to a group via the external api?

One would still need to do a post call with similar payload, but at least you have a slim wrapper client.

Thanks. Will i need fof/byobu to accomplish what I'm trying to do, or does Flarum already support group private discussions? If so, does fof/byobu expose an api?

Spindizzy using Flarum groups should suffice, it's what every extension leans on, including tags. Using byobu will make things harder to manage.

The stock flarum doesn't appear to allow only a specific group to view a discussion. As in, the Admin creates a discussion but makes it only visible to a certain group or groups.

Spindizzy true. Tags allows that, it works similarly to categories.
