Is there a way to count emails sent by the forum over a given time period?

I'm looking for the number of emails sent over a given period of time. There does not seem to be any stats about this. Is the only way to achieve this to use a 3rd party email service?

Running Flarum 1.6.3. I don't think the php info is that relevant considering my question.

using a third party smtp service, or
creating a little extension that tracks these metrics
