DOB Mandatory part of Flarum

Hi,

I'm fully invested in Flarum and will be launching 2 communities this week but I feel that it really needs a DOB field as part of its core, rather than 1 buggy extension. Is it not something that's required for websites to be compliant in parts of the world?

For now, I'm having to use the Terms plugin and ask users to only sign up if they are of age.

Any tips on this would be appreciated.

What features do you need to connect to the date of birth?

My paid Formulaire extension can be used to add a field to the signup modal that can be made visible on a user profile. There are no other features specific to age restriction though. I assume my extension isn't the buggy extension you were referring to. I would be happy to look into any issue if needed.

@luceos Fair enough. I guess I’m comparing it to other forum softwares such as phpbb which collects dob and is coppa complaint, which I believe needs to be a thing if your forum was to operate in the US. I’m not sure though, so if you’re saying it’s not required, then I’m sure it isn’t. Come to think of it though, most community softwares out there would have DOB on registration.

@clarkwinkelmann I’ll have a look at your plug-in. The plug-in I’m referring to is this one:

It works for it, but the DOB filed needs to be tapped then it does nothing, and you need to click off of it then back onto it for it to work. It’s like the DOB select doesn’t load right away.

You do not have to collect DOB for operating a site in the US (assuming your site doesn't target the child market like toys). The only thing you do have to do is block access to a user (and delete their information) if you find out that they are younger than 13 (and make a valid effort to keep that person off)

The US gov has a FAQ on COPPA and basically what it comes down to is that as long as you don't target kids 13 or under, and you don't have knowledge of them using your site, your in the clear.

chrisc297 You can use this extension, which stores age validation in your Flarum and prohibits access if you are a minor. Although there is always the possibility of being lied to, at least you can prove that the user claimed to be of legal age.

The extension is great because it adds blur to posts until age is confirmed:

chrisc297 thanks for clarifying. I just wanted to make sure it wasn’t a requirement. Having used other forum software which captures this information, I was just comparing the features and why this is something that they do have, and something Flarum doesn’t.

If it’s not a requirement, then that resolves my query.
