In your permissions tab where it says Global, make sure that "View forum (discussions and users)" is set to Members. This guarantees no one sees discussions unless registered.

You can either use Byobu, or create tags that refer to groups. Then under the permissions tab in your admin, limit who can see these discussions using the permission "View forum (discussions and users)".
