The issue

Fresh, new install in a subdirectory /var/www/html/flarum following the directions at https://docs.flarum.org/install/.

1) The home page loads without issue! https://owl.effortlessis.com (not a public server)
2) Click on "Start a Discussion" button, I see a red box lower left corner "The requested resource was not found". Browser console reads: "GET https://owl.effortlessis.com/flarum/api/tags?include=parent 404 (Not Found)"
3) /var/log/nginx/error.log reads:
2024/01/07 01:06:45 [error] 6281#0: *42 open() "/var/www/html/flarum/api/tags" failed (2: No such file or directory), client: 192.168.122.1, server: owl.effortlessis.com, request: "GET /flarum/api/tags?include=parent HTTP/1.1", host: "owl.effortlessis.com", referrer: "https://owl.effortlessis.com/flarum/"
4) "Red box" appears if I click on any link. EG profile click creates 404 error for /var/www/html/flarum/api/posts, etc.
5) find . -name api returns nothing.
6) I've run composer install to verify that everything is installed.

All requirements checked multiple times. Locally hosted MySQL. config.php was created successfully.

PS: I enabled debugging and now I can click and see the output of the 404 page.

This is almost always a problem with your url rewriting. You are using nginx, so the nginx include file is not inside your nginx server block to redirect requests, check https://docs.flarum.org/install#nginx for instructions.

Thanks, this is what I needed. This time, I kept all my changes in a mercurial repo, and eventually got it all to work.

Is the forum at / or /flarum/ ? Make sure the URL is up to date in config.php. If you are using a subfolder you might need to tweak the nginx rewrites to use the index.php file from the subfolder. Also please confirm that you have followed the instructions to remove public folder or explain how you set up the subfolder.
