Take a look at this forum homepage, the latest 20 discussions are listed and others more 20 can be loaded by clicking 'load more'.
The idea of listing 20 discussions at a time is really a good one as per performance perspective.
So, yeah, discussions are already limited to 20 but you can load more to get the next 20 etc.
