Uh-oh, I broke Nightly demo by accident

The issue

I tried to install an extension through the Extension Manager that was apparently enabled, and the system decided to say goodbye.

Flarum encountered a boot error. Details have been logged to the Flarum log file.

Whoops! I'm sorry. If you are wondering, the extension is named "User badges".

ilyamikcoder well part of your problem I would think is that you tried to install an extension made for Flarum 1 on a Flarum 2 site. You would think there should be a safe guard in place to keep that from happening but there isn’t. Also on top of that you tried to install an extension that has been marked as Abandoned and Incompatible anyways.

Will extensions that are currently compatible with Flarum 1.8.5 be compatible with Flarum 2?

Well, I did learn that:

there's a new major version of flarum currently in development, that the nightly demo was running
this discussion forum has a lot better information regarding maintenance status of extensions

Would've helped if I learned that before breaking things 😅

ilyamikcoder yeah it would have. Had you read fully the post it would have said that the nightly build was running more or less a pre alpha version of version 2 of Flarum and had you checked the thread about that extension it would have had the tags abandoned and incompatible.

I'd rather see nightly broken every day while people report the issues they had, than seeing no activity at all. So, thank you, for breaking nightly 🙏

And yeah, I think it would make sense to implement some additional safeguards based on the knowledge flarum.org now has (adopted from extiverse.com).

Fist off, @SychO is working on a tool that will automatically apply some of the most occurring changes for extensions from 1.x to 2.x. This will help extension maintainers to upgrade extensions faster. Testing the extension and taking care of the remaining changes for this upgrade is still going to be manual labor.

Secondly, we've had a similar situation moving from beta to 1.x. Back then we did a fundraiser to guarantee some of our most used extensions were patched by the @FriendsOfFlarum. We will do something similar for 2.x.

And yes, we will lose a lot of extensions due to incompatibility, but 2.x brings a lot of improvements that will make building extensions easier and allow more advanced extensions to happen.
