Removing public folder from Softaculous/cPanel Install

A couple years ago when I ran my first Flarum install, the steps at https://docs.flarum.org/install/#customizing-paths worked to remove the /public path.

Now they do not for a new install with Softaculous using cPanel. The install was done in a subfolder under public_html.

Also, it appears that the hashes for lines 9-17 in .htaccess and 8-13 in .nginx.conf need to removed.

Following the steps exactly breaks the site and results in a 500 Internal Server Error.

Tried RewriteEngine and failed

Not sure what to do next?

please retrieve the error message from your log files for us.

The steps should work on any hosting, as long as Flarum is downloaded directly from Composer. If Softaculous modified the Flarum archive from the GitHub/Composer release ZIP, then it's possible the steps are incompatible. The general concepts always apply though, and I don't think they do anything of that sort.

error_log and storage/logs are empty, of course the browser console doesn't give any useful info.

In case anyone needs to reference this thread in the future, I found a solution.

Step 1: Change the domain's document root to /public_html/subdomain.domainexample.com/public. I just did this using cPanel's Domains tool with the user interface.

Step 2: Remove <IfModule mod_alias.c> RedirectMatch 301 ^/$ https://subdomain.domainexample.com/public </IfModule> from .htaccess in the actual root folder (not public).

Step 3: Remove /public from the URL in config.php

somerandomfellow BTW. I found it is always best to download the Flarum ZIP to your desktop and upload it to your /public_html/sub/ and extract all the files there. You'll automatically get your public folder as /public_html/sub/public and then change the document root first thing.
Then, navigate to your Domain and install Flarum off of the web interface that way. No extra steps after that.
Softaculous is terrible when it comes to installing Flarum and FreshRSS as it ignores the whole /public/ issue on both instances.
