Selecting Multiple Permissions

I am a bit confused about how to set Global permissions for different groups from within Admin. If I have Members, Group1, and Group2 and I want Members and Group2 to Start discussions (for example), but not Group1. How do I do that? It appears that I can only select one or the other. It toggles the other one off when I select the other group. I have tried holding the Shift key when selecting, but no change.

I am not sure what the purpose of adding groups beyond Members, Admin, and Mods is if I have to choose between the new group or Members. I hope this makes sense.

I am ultimately trying to add a group and make members of this group always have to get approval for every discussion post. Not sure if this is a permission thing, or an extension.

neon_eddie members is a hardcoded group, it contains all users that have confirmed their email adress. Toggling that group implicitly enables all other groups. If you want to narrow it down, use different new groups to give the permission to.

Here is what I think I understand:

If Everyone is selected - Members, Admin & Mods can do it.
If Members is selected - Members, Admin & Mods can do it. Everyone cannot do it.
If Admins is selected - Admin only can do it
If Mods is selected - Admin & Mods only can do it

if Group1 is selected - Who does this include, who does this exclude?
if Group2 is selected - Same question...who does this include, who does this exclude?

If the permission is toggle-only what is the purpose of being able to add additional permission groups (other than the built-in 4 listed above)?

neon_eddie basically, you can only give permissions, never take them away.

If you already allowed "Members" to start discussions, this already includes every user, and selecting additional groups will have no effects.

In case you do not select "Everyone" or "Members", then it makes sense to select multiple groups, to include additional users.

Sometimes you need to create additional groups to achieve the permission system you need. You can even create hidden groups to not clutter the UI.

Can you perhaps describe your use case in more details? What are you trying to use the "Members" group to define?

A few items that come to mind are:

Giving a group of users a permission that would always make them get approval for each post.
Making a group a users Verified or Premium and giving them certain permissions that Members would not have.

I am using your First Post Approval extension. Can I add negative numbers to the first_post_approval_count and first_discussion_approval_count columns in the users table? I am guessing that the extension counts, and adds 1 for each approved post and discussion? What if I (for example) make thefirst_post_approval_count = -100 (for example) for certain users. Would this not make these users have to essentially get approval for the first 100 posts, while the other Members follow the normal settings in the extension?

I'm not sure the database column accepts negative values, but if you change it then yes it should work like you describe. The logic only compares the stored value with the target value, no matter if positive or negative.

You can select multiple "real" groups. It's only the special "Everyone" and "Members" group that are limited to 1, because it would make no sense to select others in that situation. Just click other groups in the dropdown to select them.
