Add a threadmarks system

Hello,

I would like to propose a new extension that I think could be useful to many, including the developers here.

A threadmark system.

This would allow users to find important news in a discussion rather than wasting time scrolling through the entire discussion.

How would it work?

For each news, the poster (or a defined group) adds a bookmark (which can of course be removed if necessary) :

Then choose the title :

And a badge is displayed at the top of the message in question.

There is a ‘Threadmarks’ button to the right below ‘Reply’.

Clicking on the button will bring up a list of threadmarks. Clicking on a threadmark will take you directly to the news item in question 🙂

The extension you're sharing is used to put a discussion in your favorite.

What I'm suggesting is to mark important one or several messages in a discussion so you can find them later easily.

Wlork You mean, like in Discord, where you can pin a single message? It's a great solution, and I find it really useful.

But I find this extension too basic. Sure, it displays the most important news, but when there's a lot of it, members are forced to scroll and click the button again to view the messages.

As I explained, I would like members to be able to go directly to the news without hiding the messages. This could be done using a list.

I have an example of a forum (not Flarum) that has this system, but I am not sure if I am allowed to show it.

Wlork It would be more helpful if you could provide a bit more explanation or share an extension from another platform that performs this function. I still don’t fully understand what you’re asking for.

I love this idea! I'll try to explain a use case I see for it here in the discuss forum:

in an extension discussion, usually you have the "readme" info in the initial post (first post) then some replies and when the dev makes an update, they usually reply with the changelog info. But when an extension is popular, there would be hundreds of messages. Besides the update messages, some are also solutions/fixes of issues that would be of interest to many but navigating through those hundred of messages can be... you know... So it would be very useful and efficient to have the threadmarks those key posts (the links and titles could appear before or after the scrubber)

Regarding how to add a threadmark, I would suggest adding a menu item to each message (where Flag is) and a modal would offer to give it a title (could be 'V1.5' for an update message or 'fix for this...' for a fix/hack etc.)

I have a video game forum.

We decided to open a discussion for each game. Our community is quite small, so it's much simpler this way.

We put several news in the same discussion.

I would like to be able to put a ‘mark’ on each news. That way, our members can easily find the news instead of scrolling through the entire discussion.

This is an example, but it applies to any discussion, any theme.

The extension you shared does this, but I find it incomplete.

I would like to be able to :

put a title on each ‘mark’
have the ‘marks’ listed (with the title) via a button that appears as I explained in my first message here. As shown in resetera's example.

Also, I don't want to hide the other messages. There is no point in doing so thanks to this list.

This also provides a history of the news items that have been posted in the discussion 🙂

Wlork Yes, now I understand. In this case, we’ll ‘mark’ the most important comments within the discussion. This new button will be a list of the marked comments, and when we click on one, it will take us directly to that comment.

Nice, now I like it. It didn’t make sense until I understood it 😄

I think it would also be really useful for Flarum too. Developers like you could better highlight updates for extensions.

Hello,

Given that development of Flarum 2.0 has become very active, I would like to clarify something. If there is a volunteer to develop this extension, and you want to move directly to version 2.0, I'm fine.

Even if I won't be migrating to version 2.0 right away, at least I know it exists... And I prefer that to nothing.
