nxmndr EDIT : ah, I meant within a thread.
I am analyzing the implications of this now. Sorry. I was only focused on the homepage, where this offense really seems to be the focus. Particularly in TikTok and Instagram.
Edit, to add: It appears this is only focused on SOCIAL MEDIA and not on Hobbyist forums and such. It would be surprising if they were to target forums just on this. I don't see Reddit listed on the article, which would be closer to what Flarum is than Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc.
TikTok/Instagram: The scroll is truly infinite. It uses an algorithmic recommendation engine to pull in new, unrelated content forever to keep you on the app. This is the "doomscrolling" the EU is targeting.
Flarum: In a Flarum thread, the scrolling is functional navigation. You are scrolling through a specific discussion with a beginning and an end. Once you reach the last post in that thread, the scrolling stops. It is essentially just a "pageless" way to read a single document, which is not considered predatory or addictive in the same way.
Flarum’s design is focused on utility and readability. Because Flarum does not use an algorithm to "push" addictive content into your face to keep you from leaving, it doesn't meet the definition of the "addictive design" the EU is currently describing.
