Flarum 2.0.0-beta.8 released - 2.0 is now feature complete

Forogramero In my tutorial on installing the Flarum 2 beta (here and here), I suggested that any Beta testing should make use of snapshotting in the underlying OS/containerization layer. One would ideally be able to roll back to the point before Flarum got installed with composer (but the fresh database, depended-upon packages, user accounts, etc are all ready).

There's a nice juicy "Create Snapshot" button in the Incus WebUI, for example (I use Incus to test Flarum, just saying):

Also Note, Debian 13 has PHP 8.4, so no upgrade needed there WRT dependencies.

Seems like changing slug drivers would break the old URLs, so not sure I'd do that. I also didn't realize Twemoji was still being maintained after the team was laid off. Glad to see it being actively updated! I will need to look into updating to PHP 8.5... I'll probably need a new container for that.

The extension suggestions on nightly are not the most useful:

It recommends extensions already installed and enabled on the instance (approval, likes, tags)
It recommends an extension (badges) which is not yet compatible with the current version

Not sure if this is a limitation of the current implementation or bugs.

A issue with Draft in mobile :

When I save my message (new discussion or reply), the notification shows two drafts

The draft appears at the bottom of the screen with CSS issues

When we try to go to the drafts page, we see a blank page

ClaudiusH The 4 recommendations here belong to my extensions, and these are determined by the extension developers. I actually left them as they are because I’m confident they will be updated to 2.x before the stable 2.x release.

I will remove them from the recommendations in future updates.

Edit: I just noticed this now. I’m not sure why they are still being recommended even though they’re already installed. I’ll look into this.

How safe is it to use beta 8 on a production forum?

I’ve been fed up with the Siteground hosting limitations, high price and recent warnings about exhausting the monthly CPU quota and being throttled. And that’s a small piano forum. So, in the last few weeks, I’be been preparing a Hetzner VPS where I installed a copy of my forum, upgraded it to Flarum 2.0, now on beta 8, have been fine tuning it and optimizing it a lot and it seems to run pretty stable now. I haven’t yet opened it to anyone else though. But I’m wondering if I should take the risk and do it. I still miss some important extensions such as @clarkwinkelmann Rich Embeds, Advanced Search Highlight (which needs Backoffice), Post Stream Search, Selective MediaEmbed, but we can live without them for a while.

What do you think?

CyberGene I’m using beta 8 on my production forum — no issues at all. I always have SSH access in case I need to fix something, but everything works fine without any changes. Realtime and Redis are also major advantages of having SSH access

Capybara I've had SSH with Siteground too and that's where I do all the configurations, so probably better than other shared hosting services, but it's still limited, for instance it doesn't support Redis, hence no Realtime. I have all of these on the VPS now. And I pay close to €20 monthly for the Siteground plan which is absolutely ridiculous for all the limitations.

Personally, I’m waiting for the RC version, at the very least. And I want all extensions I use to have been fixed and/or made compatible. Luckily, 95% of the extensions I use are from FoF. Also, I’d like to see if it’s possible to use Realtime on a shared server.

You might run into issues there. Most shared hosts don’t have Redis and like Redis Realtime needs a daemon setup and a service running to work. Most shared hosts don’t or won’t allow this. As cheap as VPS servers are now unless you just have no knowledge or very little knowledge you’re better off. You can install cPanel, Plesk, etc on the VPS to handle the ease of setting things up but another option is something called Ploi which is similar to Laravel Forge the difference is Ploi has a free option. It will install the OS and a stack for hosting your site such as PHP, mySQL or MariaDB, Redis and a few other things.

The Admin dashboard HTML structure is borked with two <li> element containers stacked:

Also the automatically generated Widget background color is always failing accessibility contrast tests, for some primary colours slightly better other times worse.

This could be fixed by increasing the HSL lightness value or adjusting font sizes / weight.

I would consider these accessibility bugs, but not sure the majority agrees because it's admin. I'm happy to turn them into GH issues

I notice that whenever I load or refresh the forum (noticed here on Discuss and on my 2.0b8 instance), for a brief moment there’s a rendering mess on the screen with bright flashing elements, text jumping/moving, etc. Looks almost like an intentional animation but apparently it’s not and is rather jarring. Besides, the forum loads slower than 1.8. Is that a known issue and will it be fixed?

Wlork I got Realtime working on Flarum 2.0 for my clients on 2.0 by mimicking my realtime configurations on 1.8.x.
You just have to make sure your hosting is compatible with it.
Pusher gets expensive.

CyberGene I have multiple clients on 2.0 beta 8 and haven't heard a single complaint. In fact, I've only heard how awesome it is 🙂

Hello flarum team,

It's nothing personal but calm down with the AI emoji's, it's so unnecesary. It's like each release blog post gets more and more emoji's and it's definitely not fun to read. Just my 2 cents, maybe it's just me.

Seeing that AI is used now frequently in meta posts I do wonder if the new core team uses AI now to help develop Flarum. (I say new as I've been a part of flarum since the beginning with Franz and Toby)
If so, it might be useful having a disclaimer somewhere to clearify.

There are a lot of awful vibe coded open source projects out there (you know, slop) and I don't want Flarum to go downhill and be a part of that. We all know Flarum v1 has been great and its an outstanding piece of forum software, I've been here way too long to see Flarum fall, not on my watch 😅

As a senior dev, I hope there's always an experienced team member (with the knowledge and context of whole Flarum) involved before releasing stuff. I know the pain and suffering of reviewing AI generated code and definitely don't wanna experience unstable systems when making extensions for Flarum or something

We all want stable, trustable, extendable and secure forum software 🙂

Ending in a more positive note; I'm looking forward for RC and to update all my extensions for v2! Didn't expect the jump to laravel 13 already too, very surprised!

Pusher, I’m using the free version and that’s enough for me 🙂

But I hope I’ll be able to get the realtime extension working. I’ve installed it, but with no configuration, it obviously doesn’t work.

I’m waiting for the documentation and I hope it won’t be too difficult to set up. At worst, I’ll create a thread in Support 🙂

Wlork just follow the instructions for the realtime extension from 1.8. You need supervisor enabled on your server.
